World Organization for Development revealed the winners of the World Innovation Award at BRICS Innovation Forum

The World Innovation Award was designed to honor leaders from the developing world who have made an outstanding personal contribution to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals through a systematic effort to implement innovative solutions.

The seven nominations were dedicated to seven Sustainable Development Goals, where digital innovations play a special role.

The awards were delivered to the winners by the leadership of the World Organization for Development and the highly reputable global experts at the special ceremony at the BRICS Innovation Forum on the 29th of August in Moscow.

 

Ismail Tekin, Vice Chairman of the World Organization for Development, delivered the prize in the special nomination of the Award “Empower women and girls” (for outstanding contribution to the Sustainable Development Goal 5) to the winner – Reyna Juanita Rueda Alvarado, Mayor of Managua (Nicaragua). The other nominees were Carolina Coss, Mayor of Montevideo (Uruguay), and Maria Sheila, Mayor of Manila (Philippines).

Rae Kwon Chung, Nobel Peace Prize 2007 holder, delivered the main prize in the nomination “Industry, innovation, infrastructure” (for outstanding contribution to the Sustainable Development Goal 9) to the winner – Natalia Sergunina, Deputy Mayor of Moscow (Russia). The other nominees were Dawoud Al Hajri, Director General, of Municipality of Dubai (UAE), and Sun Dong, Secretary for Innovation, Technology and Industry of Hong Kong (China).

Purnima Anand, President of the BRICS International Forum, delivered the prize in the nomination “Quality education” (for outstanding contribution to the Sustainable Development Goal 4) to the winner – Shanta Thoutam, CIO of the Telangana State (India). The other nominees were Fernando Padula Novaes, Municipal Minister of Education of São Paulo (Brazil), and Saif Al-Hiddabi, Undersecretary of Research and Innovation, Ministry of Higher Education, Research and Innovation (Oman).

Aisha Bin Bishr, Global Digital & Smart Cities Leader (UAE), delivered the prize in the nomination “Decent work and economic growth” (for outstanding contribution to the Sustainable Development Goal 8) to the winner – Erol Özgüner, CIO of the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality. The other nominees were Kabelo Gwamanda, Executive Director of Johannesburg (South Africa), and Wu Qing, Executive Vice Mayor, of Shanghai Municipal People’s Government (China).

Mto Xulu, President of the South African Chamber of Commerce, delivered the prize in the nomination “Reduced inequalities” (for outstanding contribution to the Sustainable Development Goal 10) to the winner – Khaled El-Attar, Vice Minister of Communications and Information Technology (Egypt). The other nominees were H.E. Mohammed bin Abdullah Al-Maghlouth, Deputy Minister of Human Resources and Social Development (Saudi Arabia), and Bruno Soares Reis, Mayor of Salvador (Brazil).

Nicholas You, Executive Director for Urban Innovation at Guangzhou Institute (China), delivered the prize in the nomination “Sustainable Cities and Communities” (for outstanding contribution to the Sustainable Development Goal 11) to the winner – Abdulrahman Ibrahim, Chief Data and Innovation Officer of Al-Madinah Region Development Authority, (Saudi Arabia). The other nominees were Kamarulzaman Mat Salleh, Mayor of Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia), and Martí Batres, Mayor of Mexico City (Mexico).

Amor Maclang, CEO of Digital Pilipinas, delivered the prize in the nomination “The power of partnerships” (for outstanding contribution to the Sustainable Development Goal 17) to the winner – Daouda Gueye, Vice Mayor for Technology of Dakar (Senegal). The other nominees were Eduardo Fabián Martínez Lomelí, Secretary General, Municipality of Guadalajara (Mexico), and Marta Arsovska Tomovska, Ex-Director of Digital Government, Office of the Prime Minister (Serbia).
